Message from Project Director, Mark T. O’Connell, M.D.

America’s health care system is undergoing rapid and revolutionary changes. Physicians are expected to fulfill new roles, with many new responsibilities, requiring skills and knowledge not typically found in the traditional medical curriculum.

This web-based courseware has been developed to complement the undergraduate UME-21 medical curriculum at the University of Miami School of Medicine with support from the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). During the 4 years of medical school, our students participate in many lectures, panel discussions, small group sessions and practical and clinical exercises which address the important content of the UME-21 curriculum. Even though this on-line courseware is an important component of our entire curriculum, we have designed these modules to stand on their own. Hopefully, many users, in addition to our own medical students, will find them useful.
